Bruxism treatment:
Bruxism is the medical/dental term for when we grind our teeth either during the day or while we are sleeping, little is known of the direct cause for this issue but research suggests it could be due to stress, anxiety, snoring, sleep apnoea, taking SSRI medication or lifestyle related causes include high intake of caffeine and alcohol and the use of illicit drugs such as cocaine and ecstasy.
Wearing down your teeth isn’t the only affect caused by bruxism. It can also result in:
Face, neck and shoulder pain.
Pain in the Jaw, which can lead to a condition called temporomandibular disorder (TMD)
Worn and broken teeth.
Headaches
Ear ache
Disturbed sleep
Patients with a diagnosis of mild to severe bruxism by either their dentist, maxillofacial surgeon or GP can be treated using this proven method that utilises Botox®; which is the only licenced Botulinum Toxin A product for this condition in the UK. By injecting Botox into the masseter and temporalis muscles bilaterally, teeth grinding is reduced or elevating it altogether.
There is no down time and patients can return to their normal daily activities after the treatment.
It should be noted that those under 18, patients with a history of sensitivity to Botulinum Toxin A, neurological and musculoskeletal disorders or pregnant/breastfeeding aren’t suitable for this treatment.
